Research topics
Giancarlo Cotella (Cuorgnè, Torino. April the 8th, 1979) is Associate Professor of Spatial Planning (ICAR/20) at the Interuniversity Department of Regional and Urban Studies and Planning, Politecnico di Torino. His research focuses on comparative spatial planning studies in Europe and beyond. In particular, he explored extensively the mutual influences between the territorial dimension of EU policies and the spatial governance and planning systems of the Member States. In recent year he also shifted its attention to metropolitan governance and to the promotion of a more sustainable urbanisation and land-use. He published widely in the international scientific literature and coordinated the activities of several scientific projects within the framework of Horizon and of the European Territorial Observatory Network (ESPON). He has been visiting scholar at various prestigious research institutions around the world: University of Tokyo, University of Paris Sorbonne, University of Kaiserslautern, Radboud University Nijmegen, Ryukoku University Kyoto, University of Thessaly, Wroclaw University of Technology, Newcastle University, University of Tartu, Izmir University of Technology. He is actively involved in the activities of the Association of European Schools of Planning since 2006 and coordinates the AESOP Thematic Group Transboundary Spaces, Policy Diffusion, Planning Cultures.
